2006 In Review: Rossi pulls up at Le Mans

Valentino Rossi's title chances suffered another serious blow at the French Grand Prix, when mechanical problems forced him to retire from a race that he was almost certain to win, out in front on the road to victory number 2 of the season.

The Italian pulled up on lap 21 at Le Mans, and his retirement completely changed the race, with Dani Pedrosa, Marco Melandri and Loris Capirossi engaging in a fierce battle for the podium spots during the final part of the Grand Prix. It was Rossi's third race off the rostrum, unprecedented for him in recent years. Not since the start of his debut season in 2000 had he experienced a triplet of races outside the top three.
