2006 In Review: Hayden opens 2006 account

After numerous podium finishes, Nicky Hayden took his first victory of 2006 at Assen, after a spectacular battle with countryman Colin Edwards. The two riders left spectators open-mouthed after a last lap where Edwards passed his rival but in doing so suffered a crash on the final corner. Hayden also went off track but was able to take victory, strengthening his position as championship leader.

The win was Hayden's second in MotoGP, when it was looking increasingly likely that a repeat of his 2005 maiden success at Laguna Seca would be his best chance of triumphing this season.
