2006 In Review: Hayden repeats at home

Nicky Hayden reigned supreme once more in his home race, the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, reinforcing his strong position at the head of the classification and repeating his maiden MotoGP triumph.

The American rider chased poleman Chris Vermeulen hard in the first half of the race, and once ahead he set about extending the distance between himself and the trailing pack. Second place went to team-mate Dani Pedrosa on his first visit to the Californian circuit. Marco Melandri took advantage of Valentino Rossi's mechanical problems and eventual retirement to take third.

Hayden increased his lead to 34 points in the classification, ahead of Pedrosa and Melandri.
