Red Bull Rookies Cup gets in gear

Next Monday at the Comunitat Valenciana Circuit, the scene of the final race on the 2006 MotoGP calendar, will hold the selection phase for the Red Bull Rookies Cup. Looking to find the stars of the future, the project is supported by energy drink Red Bull, KTM and Dorna Sports, rights holders for the World Championship.

The 1100 entries have been whittled down to 200 boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 16, hailing from nearly thirty countries. Due to the large number of participants, there will be two groups taking part in the first days of the selection phase.

The young hopefuls will have 15 minutes to show their skills on the track. A group headed by Alberto Puig and Harald Bartol will analyse their potential onboard the bikes. Those to go through will attend the second stage, which takes place on Wednesday. This final day will determine the 20 riders who will take part in the 2007 seven-date Red Bull Rookies Cup.

Champions such as Dani Pedrosa took their first steps on the road to glory through similar projects. The Spanish rider was chosen for the Movistar Junior Cup, which opened the doors for his arrival in the World Championship.
