Nervous anticipation for Red Bull MotoGP Rookie Cup hopefuls

Valencia has welcomed the youngsters hoping to earn a place in the Red Bull Rookies Cup next season, with the skies clear and temperatures in the 30s. It was one less thing for the hopefuls to worry about as they waited anxiously for their turn to take to the track. The riders, divided into groups of six or seven, had 20 minutes to show their stuff at the circuit, with the majority already having already had motorcycling experience of some form or other.

Amongst the family members present to watch the riders, a few familiar faces were in attendance. Former 250cc World Champion and MotoGP Team Manager Sito Pons was lending his support to son Axel at the Valencian circuit. The younger Pons was in a group consisting of only Spaniards, with the grouping system divided according to nationality. Sporting Director Raul Jara explained to motogp.com that this decision was taken "to allow us to have a reference point as to each country's level, although at the end of the day it will be the rider who shows his quality through lap times and development."

"Harald Bartol is following the riders around the track, whilst I am moving between pits, pit lane and parts of the circuit. Alberto Puig is in charge of meeting up with the riders before they go onto the track and watching how they ride," commented Jara of his fellow assessors.

"The hopefuls are all riding a Metrakit 125cc, which is a good bike, the best in my opinion for this kind of test."

Today's chosen riders will be entered into Wednesday's final phase, where they will join up with tomorrow's selected youngsters.
