· Alvaro Bautista starts from pole for the fifth time in 2006.

· If Bautista wins, he would become the first rider in the class to score six victories in a single season since Youichi Ui in 2001.

· Mika Kallio finished second at Sepang in both 2003 and 2005, on each occasion behind the rider who went on to become world champion.

· Mattia Pasini, who starts from the front row for the eighth time this year, was the first Aprilia rider across the line last year, finishing in third place.

· Joan Olive starts from the front row for the first time in his Grand Prix career, in what will be his 92nd start. His previous best grid position was sixth at Donington in 2002.

· Following Hector Faubel's crash at Brno, there are just two riders in the class who have scored points at each of the first eleven races of the year: Alvaro Bautista and Sergio Gadea.
