· Hector Barbera is starting from pole for the second time in the class, his previous effort coming in China earlier this year when he went on to win the race.

· Jorge Lorenzo, who is starting from the front row for the eleventh time in 2006, has finished on the podium at the last six successive races.

· Lorenzo missed this event last year after being suspended for his part in a collision with Alex de Angelis on the final lap at the previous race in Japan.

· Hiroshi Aoyama was the first Honda rider across the line last year, finishing in fifth place.

· Roberto Locatelli won the 125cc race at Sepang in 2000 on his way to winning the world title.
