MotoGP Qualifying cancellation puts Rossi on pole

Valentino Rossi will line up for tomorrow's Marlboro Malaysian Motorcycle on pole position, achieved by virtue of his combined free practice times.

The torrential rain experienced at the Sepang Circuit in the middle of the 250cc practice session led to the delay and eventual cancellation of the planned session to decide tomorrow's grid. Race Direction made the decision based on safety, and then took the unprecedented step of agreeing on the starting positions using yesterday and today's free practice times. This leaves Nicky Hayden and Loris Capirossi alongside Rossi on the front row, whilst walking wounded Dani Pedrosa, Sete Gibernau and Randy de Puniet will occupy row 2. The top ten will be rounded off by John Hopkins, Marco Melandri and Casey Stoner.

The official statement from Race Direction was released at 4.30pm local time, and reads as follows:

"After inspections at various locations around the circuit, Race Direction have decided to cancel both the MotoGP Qualifying Practice and the 250cc second Qualifying Practice due to safety reasons created by the earlier rainstorms.

The grid for MotoGP will be formed by the riders' fastest lap times from the three Free Practice sessions.

The grid for 250cc will be formed according to the first Qualifying Practice, and all those riders who did not provisionally qualify for the race will be allowed to start."
