Rossi takes victory after another epic battle with Capirossi

Valentino Rossi took victory at today's Marlboro Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix showcase after another dramatic tussle with countryman Loris Capirossi. A breathtaking finale saw the two exchange the lead for three laps, before Rossi edged out the Ducati rider a few corners from the finish. Capirossi, knowing that the home straight would be his final opportunity to power past the reigning World Champion, hit the gas early to try and catch his rival, but ran wide and had to settle for second.

Rossi's victory closes the gap on overall leader Nicky Hayden to 26 points, and only 4 separate him and second placed rider Dani Pedrosa. The Spaniard gave a miraculous showing at the Sepang Circuit as he braved through the pain of a knee injury suffered n Friday to place third in the Malaysian race.

Nicky Hayden was unable to lift his fourth place curse, having never been able to finish on the podium at Sepang. With his team-mate establishing a small gap over him, Hayden was never in contention for a win that would have considerably aided his title chances.

Sete Gibernau gave one of his best performances of the season to finish fifth, on his return to action after missing the Czech Republic race.

In the final laps Stoner was overtaken by both John Hopkins and Kenny Roberts Jr. to finish eighth, whilst Marco Melandri and Colin Edwards rounded out the top ten.
