Locatelli dreaming of championship third place

Team Toth's Roberto Locatelli has been one of the season's surprise packages, in contention for third place in the 250cc championship with only four races to go this season. The Italian has only been on the podium once this season, at Qatar in round 2, but has particularly impressed spectators with his lightning-fast reflex starts and battling mentality against the odds. caught up with Locatelli ahead of the GMC Australian Grand Prix to talk about his hopes for the race and the final four races of 2006.

Roberto, you have had some good performances recently, despite a couple of crashes.

Yes, in Sepang I was having one of my best races of the season up until I made a small mistake and crashed out. I have good memories of Australia, having won the World Championship here back in 2000, so maybe here might be the best chance from these last four races to take another podium, which I've been looking for after Qatar. It will be hard, with many factory riders and 12 races which have all turned out more or less the same in terms of results, but we'll see.

One thing that has been especially impressive about your performances has been your fantastic reactions off the line, is there a secret to being first out of the blocks?

I don't know if it is a secret as such. It just seems to be that my reactions are fast and I can go as soon as that red light goes out. It's not the system that does it, it is in my blood. Although I don't know if it is possible to get a start like I did in Sepang all the time!

Only four races remain for you this season, and you are still in contention for third place. What is your goal in terms of the overall classification in 2006?

My dream is third, although I think that maybe it is only a dream! It is hard to finish so high with riders like Aoyama, Takahashi and de Angelis so close to me on factory bikes. In Sepang Takahashi had a problem with his hand, but he still finished ahead of me after I crashed. Every race it is difficult to pass him. My dream is third, but anything in the top five would be a successful season for me.
