Loris Capirossi and Sete Gibernau led a Ducati charge in the first free practice session for the GMC Australian Grand Prix. The duo were separated by mere thousandths of a second of each other, ahead of local boy Casey Stoner, Marco Melandri and the Kawasaki twosome of Randy de Puniet and Shinya Nakano. Kenny Roberts split the green machines from world title contenders Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, whilst John Hopkins Completed the top ten.
