Fabricio Lai was the surprise leader of the first 125cc practice at Phillip Island, with a time of 1'37.884. The Italian was the only rider to break the 1'38 barrier, and was pursued by reigning world champion Thomas Luthi and champion elect Alvaro Bautista. Mattia Pasini, Gabor Talamacsi and Mike di Meglio completed the top six, ahead of Nico Terol Hector Faubel and Bradley Smith, back for the GMC Australian Grand Prix having missed out on the Malaysian round. Joan Olive rounded of the top ten.
