Motegi 2005: Aoyama takes historic win on home soil

Hiroshi Aoyama delivered a faultless performance to clinch his first Grand Prix win one year ago at Motegi, while team-mate Dani Pedrosa completed a Movistar Honda 1-2 as he emerged victorious from a thrilling battle with Alex de Angelis and Jorge Lorenzo for second place over the last few laps.

Poleman Aoyama escaped the early challenge of Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso to dictate his pace on the second half of the race. Meanwhile, Pedrosa gradually upped his pace to challenge for second after a cautious start, but had to fight tooth and nail against an excellent Alex de Angelis.

The two riders swapped positions several times until de Angelis finally went wide midway through the last lap when second. As de Angelis went off the line, Lorenzo charged from fourth in a bid to overtake both riders in one move, but bumped the San Marinese while Pedrosa went through unaffected by the incident. Lorenzo retired while de Angelis rejoined to take the flag in seventh.

Casey Stoner benefited from this incident to take third ahead of Yuki Takahashi and Randy de Puniet. Dovizioso crossed the line in sixth ahead of de Angelis. Hector Barbera was eighth ahead of privateer riders Alex Debon and Sylvain Guintoli.
