Hopkins first out of the blocks at Motegi

Suzuki rider John Hopkins was the morning's fastest rider at Twin Ring Motegi, the home circuit of his bike supplier. A 1'48.222 lap put him ahead of Valentino Rossi, who knows that victory in Japan will be vital for his championship chances this weekend. Casey Stoner was third, whilst Colin Edwards made his return to riding in the far east after an unfortunate Suzuka 8-hr race.

Loris Capirossi and Marco Melandri completed the top six, ahead of Kenny Roberts Jr, Sete Gibernau and Nicky Hayden. Toni Elias rounded off the fastest ten.
