Victorious at Motegi in 2005, Loris Capirossi was back at the top of the timesheets after the third MotoGP practice session in Japan. With a 1'46.329 lap, the Ducati Marlboro rider came in ahead of Marco Melandri and previous overall leader Valentino Rossi.

Randy de Puniet was fourth fastest on the Kawasaki, followed by Colin Edwards, Shinya Nakano and Kenny Roberts Jr, a second off Capirossi's pace. Nicky Hayden, John Hopkins and Casey Stoner completed the top ten.
