Interesting facts before the 125cc race

· Alvaro Bautista starts from pole for the sixth time in 2006. If Bautista finishes in the top three in Japan it will be his thirteenth podium of the year, equalling the record for most podium finishes in a single season in the 125cc class which is currently jointly held by Kazuto Sakata (1993) and Valentino Rossi (1997).

· Mika Kallio, who won last year at Motegi, starts from the front row for the eighth successive race.

· Julian Simon starts from the front row for just the second time this year, the other being in China which was the only other race this year that two KTM riders qualified on the front row.

· Following Sergio Gadea´s crash in Australia, Alvaro Bautista is now the only rider in the 125cc class to have scored points at all thirteen races this year.

· Mattia Pasini has qualified in seventh place, his lowest starting position since he took his first GP victory in China last year from 15th place on the grid.

· Bradley Smith´s ninth place on the grid is his best ever qualifying result in GP racing and the first British rider to qualify in the top ten in the 125cc class since Darren Barton qualified 9th at the French GP in 1996.
