Hayden could be crowned champion in Portugal

Amidst the spectacular comeback of Valentino Rossi and some of the most exciting races of the 2006 season, the fact that Nicky Hayden could clinch his first world title in just 13 days time has almost been overlooked. Depending on a number of mathematical eventualities, some more plausible than others, the Kentucky Kid could leave the Estoril Circuit on October 15th as the final 990cc World Champion with a race to spare.

The possible circumstances for a Hayden title win are as follows:

1.If he wins the race then Valentino Rossi needs to finish no higher than fifth for Hayden to become the 2006 World Champion.

2. If he finishes second in Estoril then he will take the crown, provided that Valentino Rossi finishes no higher than tenth and Marco Melandri does not win the race.

3.The most complex eventuality: If Hayden finishes third then in order for him to be champion Valentino Rossi must finish no higher than fourteenth, Marco Melandri no higher than fourth and neither Dani Pedrosa or Loris Capirossi must win the race.

If neither of these scenarios were to occur, then the 2006 World Championship would go right to the wire, with Hayden, Rossi, Capirossi, Melandri and Pedrosa all possibly in with a shot at the title at Valencia.
