Wildcards announced for Portuguese race

The Grande Premio de Portugal will see a number of wildcard entries lining up alongside the Grand Prix regulars, in the designated spots for guest riders.

Of course, the first appearance of Garry McCoy and the Ilmor team is the big eye-opener at Estoril, having formally announced their entry earlier this week. All previous wildcard entrants in MotoGP this season have been test riders from already established teams, but 2000 Portuguese Grand Prix winner McCoy will be the first rider to show the potential of Mario Illien's new project.

Elsewhere, there is a strong presence from Zongshen Team of China in the 250cc class. A curious teaming of the Asian team and home rider Joao Fernandes stands out, accompanied by native Chinese Su Rong Zai and Ho Chi Feng. Two British riders will also be lining up on the quarter litre grid, with semi-regular youngster Dan Linfoot representing Winona Racing, and Luke Lawrence riding for BM Groundworks.

Competing in his second consecutive race, Swiss rider Randy Krummenacher returns for another outing on the KTM 125cc bike, joined in the category by Czech Michal Sembera and German hopeful Georg Frohlich.
