Rossi first to show cards in Portugal

Valentino Rossi, multiple-times winner at Estoril, started his practice for the Grande Premio de Portugal at the top of the timesheets today. The Italian rider is looking to close the 12 point gap between himself and Nicky Hayden in the World Championship standings, and clocked a 1'39.398 lap to come in ahead of Loris Capirossi and John Hopkins.

Fourth place belonged to Hayden, still less than a second off Rossi's time, followed by Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa and Colin Edwards. Carlos Checa, Toni Elias and Marco Melandri rounded off the top ten.

Starting with a different kind of "bang" to what they had expected, the Ilmor Xp had smoke pouring out before it had even left pitlane. It did little to affect their practice though, as Garry McCoy put in the initial promising laps on the new machine. GP Portugal
