Hayden and Rossi top timesheets in final free practice

The two riders subject to all the talk this weekend, as their intense title duel draws closer to its conclusion, were the fastest riders in the final practice session in Portugal. Series leader Nicky Hayden topped the timesheets as the only rider to go round in under 1'37, closely followed by main rival Valentino Rossi.

Outside shot Dani Pedrosa followed the two in third, ahead of Kenny Roberts Jr and Colin Edwards. Sete Gibernau was the fastest Ducati at the Portuguese track, ahead of yesterday's fastest rider Casey Stoner. Loris Capirossi, John Hopkins and Shinya Nakano completed the top ten.

In the closing moments of the session Randy de Puniet saw his Kawasaki bike emanate flames as a result of a mechanical problem. Quickly realising the danger, he pulled over and hopped the barrier. No other riders were caught up in the incident, although oil left on the track meant that 250cc practice was delayed by five minutes. GP de Portugal
