Roberts Jr: "I thought it was the last lap"

Kenny Roberts Jr put in a stellar performance at the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal last Sunday, even leading the race on the final laps. In the end, a question of obstructed sight might have been the deciding factor in his being unable to earn an even higher position than the magnificent third place which equals his best result of the season.

Changes carried out on the chassis of the KR211V during the Motegi test seem to have provided Team Roberts with immediate results, and after starting from 13th on the grid the American rapidly worked his way up to the leading group. The breathtaking last lap saw him exchange the lead with Valentino Rossi and eventual race winner Toni Elias, but it came one time round too late for Roberts, as he later explained in an interview with motogp.com.

"I knew that we had improved since Japan, and that with a good start we could do well," said the former World Champion. "I rode carefully towards the end and put myself behind Rossi to overtake him later on. I got past him and was waiting for the chequered flag to be waved, but when it didn't come I realized that I must have missed my board the last time around and that we still had another lap to go. It went against me a little, but if I find myself in the same situation in Valencia then I'm sure that I won't repeat the mistake."

Roberts also offered more details on the race in an exclusive interview, available in video form.

"I didn't want to collide with Rossi so I slotted in behind him, I also tried that when I was battling it out with Hayden. I took an intelligent attitude to riding, avoiding risks, although that doesn't mean that I didn't want to win."
