Hayden congratulated by Honda and Yamaha USA

Even Nicky Hayden proclaimed himself to be surprised by the support received from his home country after crashing out in Portugal, and MotoGP's American profile is sure to increase with the Kentucky Kid as a figurehead of the championship. Last weekend's papers featured write-ups on Hayden's magnificent title win, whilst Honda took out a full page advert in USA Today's print version to commemorate the achievement. With the slogan "Believe in the power of dreams" written in large print, a picture of Hayden with his arms raised is accompanied by another of his 2006 bike with the "69" numbering that he will exchange next season for a "1".

Gracious in defeat, Yamaha USA also took out an advert in the American press, with the simple message "Congratulations Nicky" on a blue background. The final relinquishment of the Valentino Rossi's title, due to a crash in Valencia, occupied a large amount of column inches in the rider's native Italy, in both specialist sports papers and the regular media.
