Rossi cautious on first day rallying

Valentino Rossi was a cautious customer on the first day of his WRC excursion, placing 33rd and 28th in SS1 and SS2 respectively at the New Zealand morning session. It was at least a more promising start for the Italian star than his last appearance in a rally car- a crash in the British Rally back in 2002, having completed under 17 kilometres.

After the morning's mudfest, a dried out surface allowed Rossi to get the feel of the Subaru Impreza, and on subsequent drives through Pirongia and Te Koraha he climbed up to 20th in the classification.

The crowning moment of the former MotoGP World Champion's day came late on, when he cracked the top fifteen at the Mystery Creek super special. After clocking the 13th fastest time at the stage in his 2005-spec privateer car, accompanied by Carlo Cassina, Rossi confirmed to the media that he will make another appearance for WRC at the World Rally Show in Monza next week.

The WRC New Zealand Rally runs until Sunday.
