Rossi finishes WRC excursion in eleventh

After a first day marked with uncharacteristic caution, MotoGP star Valentino Rossi's busman's holiday in WRC finished with the Italian in 11th place overall at the Rally New Zealand.

Driving a 2005-spec Subaru Impreza (one of 11 drivers in a top specification car), Rossi managed to last a fair bit longer than his last foray into WRC, a sub-17 mile outing four years ago in the British Rally. The former five time premier class World Champion lay in 24th position at the end of day one, then stepped up a gear for the second day of action. With three top ten times, and a particularly notable seventh at the Mystery Creek super special, Rossi climbed up the standings to 13th, a position he improved by two places with two tenths and a ninth on Sunday.

Rossi missed out on the top ten by just 18.8 seconds, but was some way off winner Marcus Gronholm's pace, trailing him by 20'38.8. The Yamaha rider makes another WRC appearance this week at the World Rally Show in Monza.
