Denning pleasantly surprised by Suzuki pre-season form

Rizla Suzuki Team Manager Paul Denning has hailed the timesheet-topping performance of riders John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen in Sepang and admitted that, although it is still early days for the 800cc era, the team are looking much stronger than was expected.

"We're in a better position than we thought we would be, although it is still only the start of the preseason," explained Denning after a successful three days in Malaysia. "Suzuki have concentrated on making the bike easy to ride, whilst keeping the best parts of the 990cc GSV-R."

Whilst most riders were simply getting a feel for their 2007 prototypes, Hopkins and Vermeulen set about putting in an extended series of laps with one set of Bridgestone tyres. "John did 24 laps of the circuit, 3 more than race distance, and he had pretty good lap times. Chris did 22. We were one second faster than in the race here, and we certainly weren't expecting that with the long straight that features on this track," continued Denning.

The team will be aiming to continue their run of productive testing in Jerez next week, although the Suzuki boss is well aware that there are other teams eager to impress.

"Suzuki are competitive at the moment, but I'm sure that the others will pick up the pace. Ducati already look extremely fast. Our plan for Jerez is just to try a different track under different conditions with the same bike."
