Rossi fastest despite lack of laps in Jerez

Despite only putting in 16 laps of the Spanish circuit, Valentino Rossi was the fastest rider of the first day of testing in Jerez. The Yamaha factory rider clocked a quickest lap of 1'41.745 on a rain-hit day of MotoGP action. The winner of the recent Monza rally had decorated his 800cc M1 with a new design, with a somewhat regal feel which can be seen in's picture gallery.

The majority of riders present only took part during the first part of the day, and even that was somewhat late in starting. Only Colin Edwards,Dani Pedrosa and Jeremy McWilliams had completed over 30 laps by the time the day's events had concluded.

Rizla Suzuki's good form continued with John Hopkins' second place, ahead of Edwards and Pedrosa. Shinya Nakano, Marco Melandri and Alex Barros were all carrying out their first test on their respective 800cc prototypes under less than ideal conditions.
