Rossi on record pace

Under sunny weather and mild temperatures, the MotoGP riders gathered at the Jerez circuit had a fruitful second day of testing. Most of the riders began testing around midday, as they waited for the track to dry out completely.

Valentino Rossi was again the fastest rider on track but this time he was able to close on record pace, posting a fastest time of 1'40.688, less than a tenth of second off his own circuit record lap that he set during the 2005 Spanish Grand Prix.

The Italian rider finished ahead of Dani Pedrosa, who had been the first rider to dip under the 1'41 mark. The Spaniard ended the session just 0.111 off Rossi's best, but his session was cut short before 5.00pm when he suffered a mechanical failure.

Rossi's team-mate Colin Edwards was third fastest ahead of the Rizla Suzuki duet formed by John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen, who were the fastest Bridgestone riders ahead of Ducati Marlboro riders Casey Stoner and Loris Capirossi. Japanese veteran Nobu Aoki supported the Suzuki regulars, taking over Hopkins' GSV-R in the late stages of the afternoon.

Marco Melandri and Shinya Nakano continued to discover the new Honda RC212V while Alex Barros was also getting used to his new ride, Pramac d'Antin's Ducati GP7.

Tomorrow's session will be the conclusion of this three-day test and will also be the curtain-call of the 2006 post-season as the ban on MotoGP testing will be enforced on Friday.
