MotoGP riders visit Misano

This Monday in Italy, those in charge of the Misano circuit met up with safety organisations and a number of Italian riders to analyse the circuit which will play host to the GP Cinzano de San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini next season.

Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi, Alex de Angelis, Marco Simoncelli, Mattia Pasini and Roberto Tamburini took a lap of the track to check the state of play on safety work undertaken in Misano, alongside the Grand Prix Commission. All showed great enthusiasm ahead of the latest addition to the MotoGP calendar.

FIM Road-Racing Commission President Claude Danis explained some of the changes to the circuit, noting that "after the opportunity to organise a MotoGP race here had been officially requested, we recommended that any race should be run in the opposite direction to the usual configuration. This was for safety reasons, as then we asked that the turn incline be increased, and a series of modifications to further improve the track."

Mariano Spigarelli, President of Santa Monica SPA, declared that: "We knew that the arrival of the World Championship would be an ideal moment to renovate the circuit. We have had the same design for 36 years, and for this event it was necessary to totally renovate the previous structure. When work is completed, we will have a 4200m long and 12m wide track, and the biggest improvement has been the creation of new grandstands to allow access for more than 18,000 spectators.

The track is beautiful. It will be a technical circuit, with hard braking in MotoGP. During the lap alongside the safety supervisors we have noted a pair of dangerous points to modify, and also the need for a couple of extra run off areas. I took my first steps in the world of racing here, so I'll be excited to ride in San Marino again. The only problem is that I know so many people here that I will have to change my telephone number because of all the calls I'll receive!

Loris Capirossi

The riders here are very happy with the possibility of riding at Misano. There is a lot of passion for riding, and I'm convinced that it will be a success. The track has improved a lot.

Alex de Angelis

Riding in my home race is going to be fantastic. I was a wild card here in 1999, but the next time will be different. I will have the support of everyone here.
