Checa takes victory at Bologna Motorshow

In what he will be hoping is a sign of things to come, Carlos Checa was the winner of a special event in Italy riding a Honda yesterday afternoon. The Spaniard, who joins Lucio Cecchinello's LCR team for the 2007 season, participated in the "Barclaycard Superbikers" Supermotard race at the 31st Bologna Motorshow, competing against such stars as Randy de Puniet, Max Biaggi, Andrea Dovizioso, Mattia Pasini, Alex De Angelis and brother David on the Honda 450CRF.

After two practice sessions, the Spaniard took part in the "American Race," in which he took victory ahead of home riders Pasini and Dovizioso. Checa was happy with the performance, which counts as valuable practice during the MotoGP test ban period.

"I enjoyed myself very much today and the public was unbelievably warm towards me! I decided to join the Motorshow once again this year because the Supermotard is also very useful for my winter training; thanks to this two-wheels discipline all the MotoGP riders can understand how to control the slide of the motorbikes in the corners. When I am in Barcelona I often practice this sport."

"This morning the track conditions were not so good because of the rain, but in the afternoon, the situation improved for the final challenge called "American Race". That's a strange race because it works by a process of elimination (at the end of 2 laps the latest 3 riders of the group must abandon the race and it restarts) but I knew the points to overtake my competitors. I held first position on the last lap and when I reached the podium for the ceremony all my team and the public applauded me, and it was very exciting!".

Said team included Team Manager Cecchinello and 250cc newcomer Eugene Laverty, the young talent moving up from British Superbikes next season under the expert guidance of the LCR Honda outfit.
