Italian viewers choose MotoGP over football

MotoGP has exceeded the popularity of football, the national obsession, according to a new survey by Italian current affairs show Tg2. The results of the survey show the World Championship to be of interest to some 28.4 million Italians, 2.4 million more than those who declared themselves followers of Serie A.

This is seen as an important step for MotoGP in Italy, from where there is a steady stream of talented riders entering the World Championship. Up to third place in the annual list, the number of people following the exploits of Rossi, Capirossi, Melandri and other stars has increased by 27% since 2002. The popularity of Valentino Rossi put him fourth in a test of recognition, with 89% of those surveyed being able to correctly identify him. The 3 most recognised were all members of Italy's FIFA World Cup winning squad.
