Favourites 250cc: Jorge Lorenzo

Based on his impressive record during his championship-winning 2006 season, Jorge Lorenzo is the odds-on favourite to retain the 250cc title this year. The Majorcan rider took eight victories in his triumphant ascension to the pinnacle of quarter litre racing, although a mid-season dip in form allowed Andrea Dovizioso to close the points gap and push the battle to the final race.

Famous for his wild celebrations and charisma, Lorenzo's first victory in 250cc came at the opening race of last season, at his home circuit in Jerez. Fans continued to support him throughout the year, and his profile was raised in both sports and mainstream media as a result of his continued success and quotability. He is now every bit as recognisable in Spain as former 250cc champion and now MotoGP star Dani Pedrosa, a former and undoubtedly future rival for Lorenzo.

Although many expected Lorenzo to attempt a move up to the premier class, both the Spaniard and manager Dani Amatrain made it clear that part of their grand plan was the winning and defending of the World Championship, and he continues in the official Aprilia factory team in 2007. He will face tough competition as part of a grid filled with both standouts from 250cc and some new arrivals from the 125cc class.
