Surprise Packages 250cc: Shuhei Aoyama

One of the 250cc class' outstanding talents, Shuhei Aoyama heads into his second season hungry for success. Rookie Of The Year in 2006, the 22 year old finished 8th in the general classification. Although this would be seen as a successful transition to the quarter litre category after national 125cc success and one World Championship wildcard appearance, Shuhei remained somewhat blasé about achievements in his maiden season. "It's a nice achievement, but it should be expected when I have the backing of a team with the calibre of Repsol Honda," commented the Japanese rider.

Aoyama continues with the Honda factory team in 2007, and will want to add to his tally of podium places this season having only managed to step onto the rostrum at Le Mans. In that race spectators were on the edge of their seats watching an epic battle between Shuhei and his older brother Hiroshi, and with both emerging as rising stars in 250cc, there could be many more duels over the course of the year. He will also have competition from new team-mate Julian Simon, with the Repsol Honda team finally lining up a permanent replacement for Sebastian Porto after his retirement last season.

Living with his brother in Barcelona, Shuhei is renowned for his hard training regime and fun-loving personality. A perfect example of the latter was when, amidst the torrential rain in Malaysia for the eventually-cancelled MotoGP qualifying session, the younger Aoyama brother performed a raindance for the cameras.
