2007´s Dark Horse: Marco Melandri

Marco Melandri is a former World Championship runner-up, and one of the top favourites to go one better in 2007. Last season he rode through a number of injuries that would force other riders into a prolonged spell on the sidelines, including a fractured collarbone that had not been discovered until after he had taken third place at Donington three weeks after suffering the injury! He finished 2006 in fourth place, just one point behind Loris Capirossi.

Melandri has two novelties ahead of him in the premier class this season, as he joins the rest off the field in making the change to 800cc bikes but also switches tyre manufacturers to Bridgestone. The Italian is always a threat to the leaders, and can often come from nowhere to snatch a podium place or victory, but his main handicap throughout his run in MotoGP has been a lack of consistent form for a prolonged period. Honda's collaboration with Bridgestone in 2004 brought good results for Makoto Tamada, and Melandri will be hoping that this kind of pedigree will bring him success in 2007.
