Surprises For 2007: Roberto Locatelli

If there is any rider you'd want on your side in a gunfight, it would be experienced Italian Roberto Locatelli. The 32 year old has the fastest reflexes in the World Championship, and regularly blitzes through the field before the grid reaches the first corner. Speaking to motogp.com last year, Locatelli said "I don't know if it's a secret as such. It just seems like my reactions are that good that I can take off as soon as the red light goes out. There's no system to it, just something that runs through my veins."

Once at the front of the pack, ‘Loca' has all the tools necessary to maintain a top place. World Champion in 125cc back in 2000, the Italian has plenty of top level experience as he has switched between the lower cylinder class and the 250cc category. Last year he was part of the Hungarian Team Toth outfit, with whom he challenged for third place in the quarter litre category and took the 2006 Best Privateer award after an outstanding season in which he earned one pole position and two podium places.

Locatelli's final race for Team Toth gave him his highest position of the season, second place behind Alex de Angelis in Valencia. Aprilia have given him a factory bike for 2007 in the Squadra Corse Metis Gilera team, something of a guarantee to most that he will be up with the frontrunners this season, and possibly competing for the top honours in the quarter litre class.
