Michelin work through winter on tyre development

Whilst the on-track action has been subject to an enforced break, tyre manufacturers continue to put in the hours to further improve their 2007 compounds. Jean Philippe Weber, Michelin Competition Director, spoke to motogp.com this week about their winter tasks.

"During the winter test season we have focused our development on the front tyres. The 800cc bikes enable more corner speed and good handling, therefore the improvements made during the last tests in November gave us clear directions with which to also improve handling, feeling and grip. These identified directions will be confirmed in Sepang during tests in January."

On the rear tyre we tested softer compounds because of the lower torque of the 800ccs. Of course the next tests will be very important because our partners have worked very hard since Jerez to improve the power of the bikes."

We also worked on the integration of the tyre marking within the manufacturing process based on the new tyre regulations, where each rider will have a maximum of 14 fronts and 17 rears for the whole race week-end."
