Rain hits Jerez for first day of support class testing

The 250cc category joined the premier class in holding tests today, although closer to the majority of the teams' European bases than Malaysia. A large number of riders took to the track at the Jerez Circuit in Southern Spain to open the 2007 preseason testing schedule, amongst them reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Of those to put in laps on the 250cc machines, former 125cc World Champions Thomas Luthi rode four laps more than Wilairot but had got into his stride enough to top the timesheets with a time of 1'47.317. Both the 2005 titlist and 2006 Champion Alvaro Bautista, who rode nearly 50 laps of the Jerez Circuit, finished the day with faster times than defending 250cc king Jorge Lorenzo. The two were the only riders to go round in under 1'48.

Whilst the MotoGP riders were blessed with good weather, avoiding the predicted downpours at the Sepang Circuit, the quarter litre class had their work seriously hampered on day one by rainy conditions. One of the worst affected was Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot, who in his first appearance in the World Championship could only undertake 7 laps before rain appeared with almost comic timing. The rookie will be hoping that such luck doesn't prove to be a sign of things to come in 2007.

The first test of the season would have been the debut outing on the LCR Honda 250cc bike for Northern Irish rider Eugene Laverty, but he has been withdrawn from the proceedings due to technical reasons. Instead, his maiden ride in the quarter litre class will come on February 8th in Catalunya.
