Runner-up in the 125cc category for the past two years, Mika Kallio is one of three top riders to move up to 250cc this season. The Finn accompanies the two riders who edged him out of the lower cylinder class World Title, Thomas Luthi and Alvaro Bautista, on one of the strongest quarter litre grids in recent memory.

Kallio is an adaptable rider, having plied his trade in 125cc, "ice-bike" racing in his homeland and a variety of car races during previous pre-seasons. He made his Grand Prix debut in 2001 and earned a full time ride with the Ajo Motorsport team for the next season, in which he was the best rookie with 11th overall. The following year he also took 11th in the Championship but took his first podium by taking second at Sepang, having joined the new KTM team mid-way through the season.

Then followed a fantastic battle with Luthi for the title in 2005, and few could hang with a dominant Alvaro Bautista in 2006. With both his rivals announcing a move up in cylinder class for this season, Kallio has decided not to rest on his laurels and will be aiming to challenge for 250cc glory this season.
