Hayden leads the way at midday in Qatar

The entire 2007 MotoGP grid gathers together for the first time today, as all 21 riders participate in the first day of the Official Test in Qatar. The three days of preparation will hold them in good stead for the season curtain-raiser at the Losail Circuit in just under a month's time, as they continue developing the 800cc prototypes.

World Champion Nicky Hayden topped the timesheets at midday on the Repsol Honda factory bike, continuing on from his powerful performance at Phillip Island just under two weeks ago. ‘The Kentucky Kid' clocked a time of 1'57.067 as he continues to adapt favourably to the RC212V.

The American was over a tenth of a second faster than last year's race winner Valentino Rossi, who also arrived in Qatar off the back of a successful test, namely last week's Sepang visit. The duo are both working with Michelin's new 16" front tyre, which the French manufacturer indicated would be the norm for all Michelin riders in 2007.

The only other rider to break the 1'58 barrier as of lunchtime was Rossi's Yamaha factory team colleague Colin Edwards, who rounded off the morning's top three.

Having had his participation officially confirmed by the Ilmor team yesterday afternoon, Jeremy McWilliams was back in action after an extended lay-off. At his first test since suffering multiple injuries at last year's Jerez event, the Northern Irishman returned to riding but was visibly still far from 100% McWilliams is still using crutches to manoeuvre his way around the paddock when not on the 800cc bike.

Conditions in Qatar have been comfortable, with temperatures at around 23º and clear skies. Times at the track are not 100% reliable due to various transponder failures.
