Mamola predicts Stoner success in BMW M contest

One of the most exciting riders of his day, former World Championship star Randy Mamola has given fellow thrillseeker Casey Stoner as his pick for tomorrow's 40 minute ‘qualifying session' at Jerez.

Mamola was speaking to motogp.com after accepting Shinya Nakano's generous donation to Riders For Health in the Konica Minolta Honda garage, and explained why he was plumping for the young Australian to take home the BMW M on offer for the fastest rider.

"Casey Stoner is very fast, and Ducati are going well. He and riders like Dani Pedrosa could take it tomorrow, but I don't think everyone is just concentrating on winning the car. The younger riders I'm sure will be keen and capable, because that's what young riders do!"

Mamola also illustrated the competitive nature of the MotoGP World Championship, saying that it wouldn't just be the straight fight between Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa that some have predicted.

"Those two will be up there, but the whole field is so close. Maybe the satellite teams will drop off when the new parts come through, but the races will be incredible. As an example, Nicky Hayden was behind Rossi at some Grands Prix last season by tiny margins, but even with that small difference there was a rider in between them."
