Pedrosa on pace after fog delayed start in Jerez

The start of today's early session in Jerez on day two of the second and final MotoGP Official Test of preseason 2007 was delayed until 11.00am, due to fog in southern Spain.

As was the case yesterday morning, the first man out on track to assess the conditions was a test rider, with Rizla Suzuki's Kousuke Akiyoshi putting in some early laps.

The local conditions were cold, but not as bad as day one and eventually the main contenders on this year's MotoGP grid began to emerge and take the next step in the preseason development of their new 800cc prototypes.

Throughout the winter the new reduced engine capacity models have demonstrated the capability of lapping quicker than their larger predecessors. That has proven to be the case once more in Jerez, with both of today fastest riders so far, Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi respectively, having already lapped under Loris Capirossi's 1'41.248 best race lap time from last year's Grand Prix.

Pedrosa was impressively quick in end of season tests on the new 800cc at this venue last autumn. His best lap time so far today of 1'40.867 has been set on his new RC212V with a top speed of 251.68 km/h - far slower than the top speeds that were often produced by 990s at Jerez, again emphasising the benefits of the 800s' quicker corner speeds.

Ducati Marlboro's Capirossi is himself the fourth fastest rider of the day so far, just behind team-mate Casey Stoner as the Bridgestone-shod Desmosedici GP07 bikes again demonstrate good preseason pace.
