Valentino Rossi showed his credentials this morning as one of the firm favourites to win the BMW Z4 M Coupe BMW which will go to the fastest rider in this afternoon's special Official Practice 40 time trial.

The Doctor's devastating 1.39.363 lap in this morning's session is the fastest time recorded thus far in the Jerez MotoGP Official Test. The Yamaha Factory Racing rider tops the timesheet, with the second quickest rider being his team-mate Colin Edwards, who was almost half a second behind the Italian.

The Yamaha pair have been the only two to dip under the 1'40 barrier with Ducati, Marlboro riders Casey Stoner and Loris Capirossi just behind them on the timesheet.

World Champion Nicky Hayden has picked up the pace today having been slower than might have been expected on the first two days of Jerez testing. The Kentucky Kid has been the fifth fastest participant thus far today, though his best lap time is almost a second slower than title rival Rossi's.
