The opening ‘qualifying session' of the 2007 season at Jerez gave fans the chance to see what may be a sign of things to come this year. Many fans have been expecting a two horse race for the title since Dani Pedrosa made the move up to MotoGP last year, to challenge Valentino Rossi's dominance, but although the two battled frequently at a number of races it was Pedrosa's team-mate Nicky Hayden who took glory in 2006. Today's BMW M Award session was perhaps the closest duel yet between the Italian and the Spaniard, with both laying down the gauntlet and pushing for the BMW M Coupe prize.

There was hardly anything in it, and as the two took to the track later on they had similarly inseparable times in the final preseason session. With such close competition between the duo, combined with their impressive pedigree, fans could be in store for one of the greatest rivalries in MotoGP history this season. It is a question posed by motogp.com in the latest survey, following on from readers' recent prediction that Rossi would take glory this afternoon.
