Hopkins plays down importance of qualifying positions

John Hopkins' absence from last week's Official Test at Jerez not only left the Anglo-American without a final chance to practice ahead of next week's Commercialbank Grand Prix Of Qatar, but also put him out of the running for this season's Best Qualifier award.

John Hopkins' absence from last week's Official Test at Jerez not only left the Anglo-American without a final chance to practice ahead of next week's Commercialbank Grand Prix Of Qatar, but also put him out of the running for this season's Best Qualifier award. This will come as a blow to the Rizla Suzuki rider, who was on the front row three times last season. However, Hopkins commented to motogp.com last week that, although not the ideal situation for him, it was better to avoid the risk of setting back his injury recovery.

"It's a shame to not be able to win the BMW M, but I've got enough fast cars already and maybe it's best that I don't get anymore speeding tickets!" said Hopkins ahead of the 40 minute timed session won by Valentino Rossi. "Qualifying is important, but in any case it's race positions that get you points, not where you start on the grid."
