Ahead of the opening Grand Prix of the season, motogp.com picks out some numbers of interest relevant to the weekend's forthcoming race action.

26 - Eddie Lawson's record number of victories in the premier-class riding for Yamaha, a record which Valentino Rossi could equal with one more win in Qatar.

10 - The number of race wins Valentino Rossi needs in 2007 to equal the record number of Grand Prix victories set by Giacomo Agostini, who is the most successful rider ever. Rossi has achieved 10 or more premier-class Grand Prix victories in a season on three previous occasions.

5 - The last five races in the MotoGP class have been won by five different riders (Rossi, Marco Melandri, Loris Capirossi, Toni Elias, Troy Bayliss). If anyone other than one of these wins in Qatar it will be the first time that six or more successive races have been won by different riders since the period at the end of 1999 and the start of the 2000 season when there were a record seven different winners at successive races (Alex Criville, Regis Laconi, Tadayuki Okada, Max Biaggi, Norick Abe, Kenny Roberts and Garry McCoy).

4 - This is the fourth successive year that a Grand Prix event has been held in Qatar, the first being in 2004
