As at this point in 2006, Ducati lead the way in the MotoGP constructor's championship after taking victory in the opening race of the season. Last year was the first time that the Italian factory had been in the driving seat since their arrival in the World Championship, when Loris Capirossi stormed to victory at Jerez. Casey Stoner repeated the achievement with his first win in Qatar on his Ducati debut.

Capirossi, alongside Sete Gibernau, was able to maintain the lead at the top of both the riders and constructors standings until race three of 2006, dicing with Nicky Hayden and the Repsol Honda team until the Dutch TT at Assen.

Ducati will also go down in the history books as the constructor to close the 990cc MotoGP era with Troy Bayliss' victory at Valencia, and to open the new 800cc one with Stoner's impressive triumph.
