On a sunny morning of moderate temperatures and clear blue skies in Jerez, Kenny Roberts Jr recorded the best time in the first MotoGP free practice session of the Gran Premio bwin.com de España, with a lap of 1´41.182.

The Team Roberts rider took the early initiative on his KR212V topping the timesheets ahead of the Marco Melandri, who was 0.236 seconds slower than the American with his own best lap of the famous Andalusian circuit.

Meanwhile, the morning's top speed of 278.4 kmph was unsurprisingly recorded by Australian Ducati rider Casey Stoner, who of course took victory in Qatar onboard the awesome Desmosedici GP07 and was third fastest this in terms of lap time this morning in Andalusia.

Current MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden, started his preparations for the second Grand Prix of his title defence in much better shape than Qatar where he struggled in the preliminary run-outs and eventually finished eighth in the race. The Repsol Honda rider was fourth quickest this morning, his best lap less than four tenths of a second slower than Roberts pace setting time.

Just 0.047 seconds behind Hayden, completing the top five onboard his own Honda machinery was Spaniard Toni Elias, who will be desperate to perform to the best of his abilities in front a passionate home crowd this weekend in what is one of the most colourful events on the MotoGP calendar.
