An encouraging update from the Puerta de Mar hospital in Cadiz has indicated that the condition of injured Metis Gilera rider Roberto Locatelli is gradually improving, following his serious accident at Jerez on Saturday.

On Monday afternoon the Italian rider was brought out of the pharmacologically induced coma, which he had been kept in since Saturday afternoon - while a second CT scan has again indicated no sign of any damage to his brain.

It is hoped that he will be transferred to the Bellaria Institute in Bologna, Italy, on Tuesday, to undergo surgery on his numerous facial fractures.

Locatelli lost control of his bike during a 250cc free practice session on Saturday morning, ahead of the Gran Premio bwin.com de España. He collided with safety barriers at a speed of over 120km/h resulting in severe facial trauma, including fractures of nose, cheekbones and jaw, as well as an open fracture of his left ankle and a fracture of the left collarbone.
