A key protagonist in the epic 250cc race last weekend, Hector Barbera has little to show for his efforts after a crash on lap 15 left him unable to finish his home Grand Prix. The Team Toth rider had qualified on the front row, and battled for the lead with arch rival Jorge Lorenzo and title contenders Alvaro Bautista and Andrea Dovizioso until losing the back end of his Aprilia.

Despite his misfortune, the Spaniard still lies in sixth in the overall classification, with the next race in Turkey crucial for Barbera if he is to keep touch with 250cc leader Lorenzo. Last season he finished second at the track, despite a spectacular last lap collision with Alex de Angelis.

"It was a pity that I suffered the crash this weekend at Jerez, because the practice sessions had gone well for me and I knew that I would be up amongst the leaders," commented a disappointed Barbera after the race. "I think that I would have been capable of putting up a great fight, and I feel a little bad that I couldn't reward the Spanish fans for the support that they have given me over the past few days. They have not gone unnoticed. Now we'll move onto the next race: It's a long championship and there will be many more chances for me to win."
