Injured 250cc rider Roberto Locatelli, who was able to leave his hospital bed in Bologna last week to spend Easter with his family, has broken his silence to thank fans, colleagues, friends and medical specialists for their support since his crash in practice for the Gran Premio bwin.com de Jerez. The Metis Gilera rider has also set him self the optimistic target of the Alice Grand Prix de France on May 20th as his return date.

In an open letter, ‘Loca' wrote:

"Dear friends and fans,

After nearly four weeks at last I'm able to write you, and, believe me, I can consider that a great privilege for me. I can't find the right words to thank you. You've been wonderful. I've realised that many people love me, but I couldn't have imagined that there were so many!

All the support gives me even more energy to recover as quickly as possible, because I want to ride my motorbike as soon as I can, as you have already been informed. Doctor Costa told me that perhaps I'll be ready for the Italian GP at Mugello, at the beginning of June, but I hope to be able to return for the French GP in Le Mans, fifteen days before. You'll surely think I'm mad! Well, after all that happened, I think you'd be right, but racing is my life and, although my health state is still precarious even now, I feel that I'm recovering quickly.

That's why I think that, with the help of my physiotherapsts Chionne and Redaelli, the Mobile Clinic, and everybody's love, including my entire team, maybe I'll be able to get on my Gilera 250cc bike. I miss it! At the moment, however, my only purpose is to be able to stand because the fractures to my legs don't allow me to do so yet. However, day by day, I realise that I'm improving and my mood is better. I'm not able to speak, or I can communicate in a different way as I can open my mouth only a little bit. In this regard everything will be better next week.

I was surprised by my colleagues' solidarity: many of them wrote and encouraged me, some came to visit me in hospital. A lot of the time people say that the motorbike championship environment has become a bit cynical, but that's not so true, my case is perhaps an exception but I'm really glad about that.

Now I have to say goodbye because I'm still weak from the medicines that I've had to take, from the pharmacological coma and from the operations I underwent as well. I hope I'll be able to write to you again soon. I hug you and I repeat that you won't get rid of me easily!

Roberto Locatelli"

The popular veteran and former 125cc World Champion has had his painkilling dosages lowered, and will return to the Bellaria Hospital on Monday for further checkups.
