Bautista gives Lorenzo food for thought

Such has been title holder Jorge Lorenzo's dominance thus far in the 250cc category 2007 World Championship he will perhaps be relishing the battle with compatriot Alvaro Bautista this weekend in Turkey.

Fortuna Aprilia's Lorenzo has won both Grands Prix from pole so far as he defends his crown, but it could be a different story this Sunday on a track where he crashed during last year's race, as Master – Mapfre Aspar's Bautista took the advantage this afternoon to secure provisional pole in the first 250cc qualifying session.

The 125cc World Champion Bautista crashed out on his 250cc debut in Qatar in March but came back to finish second, just 0.218 seconds behind Lorenzo, in Jerez so he will be confident ahead of Sunday's race.

Bautista also finished second in Turkey last year en route to his single cylinder class title and he was on form again at the Istanbul Park track this afternoon to secure provisional pole with a lap of 1'58.405, just 0.015 seconds ahead of Andrea Dovizioso.

Lorenzo himself took provisional third on the grid only 0.062 off the pace, and while Bautista scored a psychological victory in this session, the tight times mean it could all change in the second qualifying outing tomorrow.

The provisional front row was completed by Bautista's team-mate Alex de Angelis, while Julian Simon, Mika Kallio, Hector Barbera and Hiroshi Aoyama occupy second row grid positions after today's activity.
